Quest’anno il Dieciminuti Film Festival ospiterà ben due laboratori di cinema nella sua fascia pomeridiana dedicata alla Dieciminuti Academy: il primo, curato dalla coppia Sonya Quayle e John Craine, rispettivamente regista e direttore della fotografia di Muck, uno dei corti più osannati del DFF11 e pluripremiato in tutto il mondo; il secondo ad opera di Patrizio Marone, uno dei più esperti montatori italiani, con alle spalle serie di successo come Romanzo Criminale e Gomorra, ed editor di fiducia di autori come Stefano Sollima e Ferzan Oztepek.

Sonya Quayle e John Craine: chi sono?

Se su Marone avevamo già abbondantemente disquisito in quest’articolo, sappiamo ancora molto poco di Sonya e John, i due ospiti d’eccezione che dall’Isola di Man voleranno nuovamente in Italia appositamente per il festival.

• Sonya è una regista e sceneggiatrice di formazione teatrale, vincitrice di numerosi premi a livello nazionale e internazionale. Da quando si è avvicinata al mondo del cinema quattro anni fa, è stata autrice di ben cinque cortometraggi tra cui Muck, con James Northcote e Sian Reeves, e Him Upstairs, con Gwen Taylor e Ricky Tomlinson. Il suo primo film, Catholic Boys, è in fase di pre-produzione.
• John ha studiato cinematografia alla London Film School prima di lavorare come freelance – attualmente si occupa di documentari e fiction. Negli anni ha girato più di venticinque cortometraggi e il suo primo film, Blackbird, non solo è stato nominato ai BAFTA scozzesi, ma anche per il Michael Powell Award all’International Film Festival di Edimburgo, dove ha vinto il premio “Best of the Fest”. I film di John sono stati proiettati, inoltre, in festival quali Tribeca, Raindance, EdinburghIFF, Sheffield DocFest, LA Shorts, AFI Docs, Hotdocs, Seattle, Tampere, Traverse City, Busan, Helsinki, Edinocs e il Galway Film Fladh. Il suo ultimo film è un thriller russo girato a Mosca dal costo di un milione di euro e di cui si attende il rilascio nel 2017.

I workshop: chi, cosa, quando, dove, perché

Sonya Quayle e John Craine, già ospiti dello scorso festival e vincitori del premio “Miglior Film” nella categoria Extralarge, ci spiegheranno come realizzare un corto a basso budget e come districarsi nei meandri della lavorazione dello stesso, i giorni Martedì 24 e Mercoledì 25 Gennaio dalle ore 17 alle ore 20.

Patrizio Marone si occuperà del workshop di montaggio, la fase creativa per eccellenza nella realizzazione di un corto, nei giorni Venerdì 27 e Sabato 28 dalle ore 17 alle ore 20 e dalle 10 alle 13, per un totale di 6 ore.

The 12th edition of the Dieciminuti Film Festival will host two cinema-related workshops in the afternoons reserved to the Dieciminuti Academy: the first one will be handled by Sonya Quayle and John Craine, the director and cinematographer of Muck respectively – Muck is one of the most revered DFF11 short films, winner of many prizes around the world; Patrizio Marone, one of the most talented editors in Italy, creator of Romanzo Criminale and Gomorra, will take care of the second one.

Who are Sonya Quayle and John Craine?

We have already talked enough about Marone and his career in this article, but what about Sonya and John? What we know is that they’re going to fly from UK to Italy once again for this festival only, but let’s learn more about them:

• Sonya is an award winning writer/director with a background in theatre. Since turning her attention to film four years ago, she has made five short films including Muck, starring James Northcote and Sian Reeves, and Him Upstairs starring Gwen Taylor and Ricky Tomlinson. Her shorts have gained various official selections and prizes from international. Her first feature, Catholic Boys, is in pre-production.
• John studied cinematography at the London Film School before working as a freelance cinematographer, currently working in both documentary and fiction. He has shot over 25 short films and two features. His first feature, Blackbird, was nominated for a Scottish BAFTA and the Michael Powell Award at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, where it won “Best of the Fest”. John’s films have screened at such festivals as Tribeca, Raindance, EdinburghIFF, Sheffield DocFest, LA Shorts, AFI Docs, Hotdocs, Seattle, Tampere, Traverse City, Busan, Helsinki, Edindocs and the Galway Film Fladh. His latest feature is a million euro Russian language thriller shot in Moscow and due for release in 2017.

The workshops: who, what, when, where, why

Sonya Quayle and John Craine, whose short won “Best film” last year and that’s why they’ve already been here, will teach us how to make a short film with a low budget and how to work on it. The event will be on Tuesday the 24th and Wednesday the 25th from 5 to 8 PM.

Patrizio Marone will take care of the 6-hour editing workshop – the editing process would be the most creative phase in the realization of a short film. The laboratory will take place on Friday the 27th and Saturday the 28th, from 5 to 8 PM and from 10 AM to 1 PM.
